BEYOND GOAL-SETTING:

DISCIPLINED EXECUTION OF GOALS FOR EXCELLENT ACHIEVEMENT

Proverbs 4:25; 20:13; Hebrews 12:2

Billions of People around the world see the end of the year as a time to reflect and set goals, for the new year. These goals are mostly lofty, some are set to be SMART goals. Others with tears make resolutions for a change in their lifestyle. All these are Important, as human beings are designed to recalibrate their lives from time to time to ensure there is an Improvement.
The question we need to ask ourselves is SIMPLE. Were the goals you set at the beginning of this year achieved? Were you able to tick off all the boxes as Achieved? Do you still have unachieved goals? The difference between an achieved goal and an unachieved goal is Discipline.
The bible said of Jesus in Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus had a goal in mind and stayed on despite the obstacles. He kept his eyes on the reward and that made it easy for him to look away from the challenges that came to derail him. What an example!
There are 4 Disciplines that we can adopt in our Lives to ensure we not just set goals, but we go beyond the norm of writing on paper and begin to achieve all our goals
Discipline 1: FOCUS: Prioritize and Pay attention to your Top Goals

Discipline 2: FOLLOW: Identify and Act on your Lead Measures

Discipline 3: FEATURE: Keep a Compelling Scoreboard

Discipline 4: FINISH: Consistently Create a Culture of Accountability

~Discipline 1~
FOCUS: PRIORITIZE AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR TOP GOALS
James 1:6; Daniel 9:3; Judges 8:4; James 1:6-8
The wind is known for tossing things without a direction. The whirlwind throws things in a Spiral Manner, and the items that are caught in it’s movement keep going in circles, not achieving any linear distance.
Many goal-setters are given to a whirl-wind movement in the pursuit of their goals. They keep making movements but not making Progress. There is no focus on attainment of their goals. If your goals are worth pursuing, they are worth focusing on. You must dedicate all attention to it, while desisting from destiny detractors, destroyers and derailers. A lot of unplanned activities will require your attention as you pursue your goal,
never give in and never give up the goal, be like Gideon and his Men in their pursuit on their goals (Judges 8:4.)
When we focus on our top-priority goals, we are able to make huge progress, despite looming and lurking distractions around us.
Remember the 80/20 rule, 20% of your goals will give you 80% of your result. Identify this 20% and prioritise them. Say NO to MULTITASKING, Do one thing at a time and give it the Best Effort. “Multitasking actually hampers our ability to think deeply and creatively... the more you multitask... the less deliberative you become; the less you’re able to think and reason out a problem,”
Activity 1: What are your Top-Priority Goals for 2023?
Activity 2: Identify the Whirlwind activities that take your time, hence limiting your ability to FOCUS on your Top priority Goals.

~Discipline 2~
FOLLOW: IDENTIFY AND ACT ON YOUR LEAD MEASURES
Daniel 1:8; Daniel 9:3
After you have identified the goals that are of utmost importance to you, You need to know the activities that will lead you to the Goal and Act on them.
There are activities that cannot be Influenced in the achievement of a goal, they are in your circle of concern, while others can be influenced. The ones within your circle of influence are referred to as Lead measures, while the activities you cannot influence are called the Lag measures. Focusing on your Lead measures will eventually have an overall positive impact on your Goal. A student may not have influence over who marks his answer booklet, but he can have influence over how he read and answers the questions. A business man may not be able to influence the assessment of his proposal but can ensure that an excellent job is done in preparing his proposal. You may not be able to influence your manager during appraisal, but your consistent delivery on assigned task would create a good impression over time that will leave them with no option than to rate you well.
Daniel 1:8 clearly shows how Daniel and the three Hebrews children focused on a critical lead measure which was their connection with their God. If they miss it, it would give the magicians and astrologers an upper hand and they will not be able to effectively achieve their goal of finishing tops in Babylon’s finishing school, where they were enrolled at the time.
Daniel consistently sought for knowledge, which was a lead measure in his desire to see Israel liberated from Babylon. If He did every other thing and failed to discover the plan of God for their deliverance, the goal would not have been achieved Daniel 9:2,3
Activity : Write down the Lead measures that would help you achieve the goals in Activity 1

~Discipline 3~
FEATURE: KEEP A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD
Eccl3:1; John9:4;
People Play Differently when they are keeping score, or when they are being scored. There must be a base benchmark for Measurement to Motivate you to do more or put in more effort. You must deliberately create milestones and assess your progress. Remember, to everything there is a season, you must be able to track your progress because certain goals will be impossible to achieve when the night comes.
You must ask questions such as : Where am I supposed to be? Where Am I Now? Why am I not there? How can I get there?
Make sure you always know the score, so that you can tell whether or not you are winning.

~Discipline 4~
FINISH: CONSISTENTLY CREATE A CULTURE OF ACCOUNTABILITY
John 9:4; 2Timothy 4:7, John 17:4
This is what makes the execution to happen. When you are held responsible for the actions you do. By a Partner or by a community, you will want to do it regardless of the excuse. Without this all others cannot happen or go forward. Team members, for example, hold each other responsible with the Meetings they do frequently. Because of the accountability, you will want to do everything possible to ensure you do something to move the Goal forward. Even Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me…”, it means the fact that he has a reporting line for his earthly ministry, kept him on his toes.
By consistently asking, what can I do next week that will have the Biggest Impact on the Goal and drive it towards completion, you create your own Accountability. In addition, like we learnt during the last impact academy, ensure that you get accountability partners and mentors who will also keep you accountable. At the end, Like Paul the Apostle (2Timothy 4:7) and Jesus Christ our Lord (John 17:4), You will have a testimony of accomplishment in Jesus’ name.
